Blue Shell Strike Force Wiki

This is a markdown wiki for the Blue Shell Strike Force community, with a trans, queer, and neurospicy focus. You can find a rendered copy at https://bssf.gitlab.io/wiki/.

If you're not part of the BSSF community and still want to coordinate, please reach out to a maintainer!

Topic Index

For consistency, use lowercase file names with hyphens (-) to separate words. Everything in a file or directory name will show up in a URL. As an example, Skincare is at ./self-care/skincare.md.

When adding a new directory or significant file, add a link here, without any trailing slash or .md suffix. As an example, Skincare's link looks like this: [Skincare](./self-care/skincare)

Contributing

This is a wiki. If you have edit access, you have edit access. Use it, but be nice!

  • Notify the thread before making any edits: https://discord.com/channels/687724694174040103/1179261709135908904
  • Discuss more-extensive changes with others, and write drafts in branches.
    • Merge requests are optional. Use your best judgement. You're allowed to commit to main, but be wise about it.
  • Avoid image uploads. The repository has limited storage space.
  • Strip URLs of tracking information, and do not use affiliate links.

What do I agree to when contributing?

We won't make you sign a CLA (example), but the following legalese's still necessary.

When contributing to this wiki, you agree to:

How do I get access?

[Maintainers] How do I grant access?

Unfortunately, you need to have the Owner role for the following. This is a GitLab limitation.

  • If responding to an access request (Preferred):
    • Open https://gitlab.com/groups/bssf/-/group_members?tab=access_requests
    • Verify that:
      • The requested role is Developer
      • The user is on the Discord
  • If adding a user manually (Not Preferred):
    • Open https://gitlab.com/groups/bssf/-/group_members
    • Add GitLab usernames in the text input field if necessary
    • Select the Developer role in the dropdown
    • Click the Invite button

How do I edit a page?

Before starting an edit, post in the thread. This ensures that there's no duplication of effort.

From the repository:

  • Go to the repository's home page: https://gitlab.com/bssf/wiki
  • Click on the file you wish to edit.
  • Click the blue Edit dropdown menu.
  • Click Edit single file.
    • Alternatively, if you like the Web IDE, use that instead.
    • Make sure that you have the "add end of file new line" setting active.

From the rendered wiki:

  • Click on the edit icon in the top right.
    • It should look like this:

So I Just Joined The Server, What Should I Know?

Welcome to Blue Shell Strike Force! We're a lovely (If I do say so myself) group of (mostly) queer (mostly) nerds, generally brought together by thinking 0xabad1dea is pretty neat! We hope you'll have a lovely time here.

What Are All These Channels About?

We don't have as many channels as many Discords, but we do tend to have long-running threads, which can be hard to find. So here's a list of our channels and some important threads to help you find them!

FLUFF AREA

This is for the more light-hearted talk.

  • #chat - general chat, talk about whatever you want :3
    • Blue Shell Anime Watch Party - a thread for weekly anime watch parties organised by @quantumjump. We currently watch at 7pm UTC on Sundays. More details in the pinned message!
    • Cuteposting
    • foodshare
    • random music
    • Who wants train photos
  • #trans-gressions - Lots of queer talk goes on here! It was originally a thread in #chat, but got promoted to its own channel. It should be noted that you do NOT have to be trans to participate! Just that there are often trans-related conversations going on in there. A few of us also do daily tarot readings there for some reason?
    • the trans wiki - This is the thread where we make this website! :D I don't know why it's in the trans channel
  • #code - for talking about programming!
  • #gamersonly - video game chat!
    • ashlands waiting room (aka Valheim) - Valheim
    • Duolingo thread - this is a game, right??
    • FFXIV - Moon's Haunted - racks pistol Moon's haunted
    • Prime Satisfactors - Satisfactory thread
  • #minecraft - This has a separate channel to #gamersonly because it actually came first!

TRAUMA ZONE

The channels here are where heavier stuff gets sequestered. Think of these channels as kind of a "containment zone". Some of them are mutual support channels, some are more "some people don't want to see this stuff so it gets put in its own area".

  • #quarantine - general purpose badfeels channel. If you're having trouble with something and you don't know where to turn, this is your best bet. Be aware, others here may be dealing with brainworms of their own.
  • #trans-ponders - the trans-flavoured version of #quarantine. Where #quarantine spawned from #chat, #trans-ponders spawned from #trans-gressions. The same warnings apply here.
  • #robotrevolution - for talking about, sharing the output of, and shitting on AI stuff.
  • #socialmediapocalypse - bemoaning the death of twitter, the state of the fediverse or bsky, etc.

Server Dialect

There are a few turns of phrase which are peculiar to our corner of the internet, so if you're confused about what react someone just gave your message, these might help.

  • :herb: emoji - this indicates general good vibes. "Blessings be on this post".
  • cw fi ||spoilers|| - this is something that our resident witch fi[nominal] does with some of her messages (and others of us have picked up the habit). It serves as a warning that the spoilered text may change the way you think of the world. Usually in a good way, but change should only be affected on people with their consent.

Reading List

There are a few books we tend to recommend to a lot of people. If you're here, you'll likely find these books helpful, enjoyable, or both.

  • The entire Discworld Series by Terry Pratchett. - It's a bit daunting, but there are plenty of people who will be able to help you choose where to start :)
  • What To Say Next: Successful Communication in Work, Life and Love with ASD - An incredible book for autistic and other neurodivergent people on how to successfully communicate with neurotypicals and also other nd people.
  • Complex PTSD: From Surviving to Thriving: A Guide and Map for Recovering from Childhood Trauma
  • The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind and Body in the Healing of Trauma
  • No Bad Parts - A description and workbook for the Internal Family Systems therapy system, by its creator.
  • Unmasking Autism: Discovering the New Faces of Neurodiversity

  • Brili, an app for ADHD routine management.

Brili

Brili is an app developed by Brili GmbH, designed to help organise and focus on routines for ADHD people. It was originally developed by parents of ADHD children to help them concentrate on daily routines such as getting ready for school, but was so popular among ADHD adults that they made a version aimed at adult users.

Both versions of the app (family & adult) are subscription based.

It works by allowing you to set up routines ahead of time, listing everything you need to do on an average day to, say, get ready for work in the mornings (brush hair, brush teeth, get dressed, have breakfast, take meds etc.) You order these in the routine, and give each item a goal time (e.g. brush teeth: 3min). You can set a routine either to begin at a certain time, or to end at a certain time, or to be an "on-demand" routine which is manually triggered.

When you run a routine, your phone shows a card with whatever the next item on the list is, along with how long left you have in your estimated time for that task. You can swipe left to mark an item as done, at which point the next item in the list will pop up. Alternatively you can swipe right to postpone the item one place in the list, down to reorder the list for this run of the routine, or up to say "I'm not doing this item this time".

Each item can also have notes set which will show up when that item is currently active, so you can for instance have "clean shower" as an item, with notes on that item going through the steps of cleaning the shower.

Testimonial

(this section is my (QuantumJump's) personal thoughts on the app).

The upshot of all this is that you can do all the order-of-operations and subtask breakdown work ONCE, under no time pressure, and then whenever you run the routine the only thing you have to think about is "what is the next thing my phone is telling me to do". It removes a vast amount of cognitive load from the actual performing of these routines.

It reduced the time it takes me from getting up in the morning to being ready for work from 1h 30m to a mere 30-45m, a 50-66% reduction in time, and a massive reduction in "oh god did I forget anything??" anxiety.

Differences between the Adult and Kids versions

I personally use the adult version of brili, because the family version has a weird data model if you're using it for yourself where you need to be your own "parent", whereas the adult version doesn't have that problem. However, the family version does have a couple of features which I miss in the adult version. Specifically:

  • The kids version's sounds are set to be media sounds rather than notification sounds on android, which means that they play even when your phone is on silent. I find this super useful.
  • The kids version will average how much time you take for specific tasks over time, so you can adjust how much time you allocate to do them in future.

Internal Family Systems

The Internal Family Systems Model (IFS) is a form of individual therapy focused on thinking about the mind as being made up of many parts, each of which can be examined individually, and how those parts work together. It was created by Dr. Richard Schwartz.

It can be very useful for plural systems, since it looks at everyone as being made up of a set of interrelating parts.

See more about it on Wikipedia, the IFS Institute, and Psychology Today.

No Bad Parts - Healing Trauma and Restoring Wholeness with the Internal Family Systems Model

By Dr. Richard Schwartz.

A useful guide to Internal Family Systems therapy, walking the reader through exercises to get to know their inner selves. While not just helpful to plural systems or those who think they may be plural, many of the techniques and concepts that the book explains can be used effectively between headmates.

The No Game

This is a game introduced to the discord by fi, used to help deal with both rejection sensitive dysphoria and a fear of refusing people's requests.

Steps

  1. Find a partner you trust. One of you will be the Asker, the other the Refuser
  2. Agree that for the next 15 minutes, the Asker will make arbitrary requests, and the Refuser will, without exception, say no.
    • The Asker's requests should start absurd and only get moreso, and most importantly, they should be for things the Asker absolutely does not want
    • In fi's example, she starts off with "60 pounds of charbroiled dodo steaks", and only gets more absurd from there.

This gets the Asker's brain used to being refused in a situation with no consequences, and therefore used to the idea that being rejected is not the end of the world. Similarly, it gets the Refuser's brain used to saying no to the requests of people they care about, and used to the idea that it will not hurt people to be denied sometimes.
